The Bridge on the site of the Rotherbridge

The Modern bridge at Rotherbridge, from the north.

On the modern footbridge, Rotherbridge Farm buildings in the
background.
This was the route of the main road to the south from Petworth 200 years ago.
The Previous Rotherbridge lives on, as the material in this
bridge -

The bridge over a division in the main stream of the River,
near Petworth Station.
it was built from the material from the original Rotherbridge, which was superseded
by the new one (1803) at Coultershaw. The old one being removed to prevent it's
continued use.
It has been suggested that the point of bridging the river was moved to stop the
miller at Coultershaw avoiding paying tolls on the turnpike!
The later bridge in the background was built to carry the road at a higher level
when the railway came and was being extended to Midhurst. The old bridge is now
used for access to the former station (now a B&B) and a small industrial
area.
